General tips

Bhutan is the small, mountainous country between India and China that isn't Nepal. You'll often be on a winding unsurfaced road with an incredible view of tropical mountains. It has distinctive red license plates and yellow-tipped stone bollards.

Plates

Bhutan has very distinctive red-backed plates with white text.

Road markings

Bhutan uses a variety of concrete or brick objects at the side of the road as a substitute for guard rails. This is quite unique to Bhutan.

Road signs

Bhutan has very few road signs. There are some rare cement blocks which label the road number.

Bollards

Bhutanese bollards are small concrete pillars painted white.

Poles

Bhutan has very few utility poles. If you do find one, it will often be made of metal and rusted due to the humid climate.

Scenery

The Bhutan landscape is undeniably beautiful. A tropical rainforest blankets large mountains with wet valleys littered with rice paddies. Bhutanese architecture is also unique and extraordinarily intricate.

Miscellaneous

Buddhist and Hindu religion is extremely important to Bhutanese people. Cows are sacred and you can often find them at the roadside. Prayer flags of all shapes and sizes are everywhere. Buddhist designs are faceted onto almost every surface available.
