General tips

South Africa is a relatively warm and dry country, arid in the northwest and tropical in the east. Watch out for the white Google car, gen 2 camera, and the distinctive road markings.

Plates

Full-width, usually all white front and back, occasionally yellow

Road markings

Dashed white inner lines and solid yellow outer lines

Road signs

Big green road signs with white text and yellow road numbers. Overhead signs on freeways often have a blue background. Road numbers appear as yellow block capitals, normally labelled N, M, or R roads.

Bollards

South Africa doesn't really have many common bollards, so they aren't too useful as clues.

Poles

Several different styles of utility poles are common. Wooden poles are more common in rural areas.

Scenery

Scenery varies from dry in the central and northwestern parts of the country to fairly green in the east. The landscape is mountainous near most coasts.

Miscellaneous

South Africa can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from its neighbours, but one tip is that of the group, only South Africa has gen 2 coverage (and quite a lot of it).
