General tips

Malaysia feels like a wealthier version of Indonesia, with more space around roads and buildings, and fewer small motorbikes and scooters. Other ways to tell Malaysia from Indonesia are the black rectangles on the street poles at about eye height with some text on them, and the fact that there is some Chinese text in Malaysia, which is almost never seen in Indonesia. Also be aware of the license plate differences, with Malaysian plates usually having two white sections, and Indonesian plates having three.

Plates

Malaysian license plates are usually black with white text, with the white text being split into two discrete sections. When blurred, this looks like two white blurs with black sections between and surrounding them. Notably, Indonesian black plates normally have three white sections as opposed to Malaysia's two sections.
