General tips

Brazil is the only South American country that uses Portuguese instead of Spanish. Other useful clues are the black-backed street signs and the segmented poles. Brazil often has very reddish dirt by the roadside, not unlike the dirt colour in Uganda or Australia's Northern Territories.

Plates

Full-width white plates with black text. Starting in 2018, new plates have a thin blue strip along the top, so new and future coverage might include those plates.

Road markings

Brazil has either single or double yellow inside lines. The outside lines are usually white, but can sometimes be yellow. I'm not too sure about the pattern of this

Road signs

The biggest tell for brazil is the black-backed road signs.

Bollards

Brazil does not have official bollards. You can occasionally find a rare one though.

Poles

Brazil poles are unique - the bottom half is like a ladder with wide indented segments (but not holes), and the top has small circular holes punched along it. The poles are wider at the bottom than the top

Scenery

There is a wide variety of climate in Brazil, from desert in the far east to the Amazon rainforest in the west.

Car metas

Much of Brazil is covered with a white car which only has a small silhouette visible. However, there is also a variety of other cars.

Area codes

Area codes in Brazil are a good way of narrowing down the region. As a general rule, the codes are smaller in more populous regions and larger in less populous ones. Area codes are almost always written in brackets - e.g (35)-nnnn-nnnn.

Architecture

Amapa roof

Miscellaneous

Brazil states each have their own flag, and it may be helpful to know.
